Red lights blink ominously, green numbers flash triumphantly, and somewhere in the distance, you hear the gentle hum of printers spitting out daily KPI reports that nobody reads. Welcome to the wonderful world of “measurement madness” – where we’ve confused activity with achievement and metrics with magic.

The Dashboard Dilemma

Let’s be honest here, folks. We’ve all been there. Some consultant in a sharp suit walks in, takes one look at your operation, and declares: “You need more KPIs!” Suddenly, you’re drowning in OEE calculations, tracking cycle times down to the nanosecond, and measuring things that would make a Swiss watchmaker dizzy.

But here’s the kicker – despite having more data than the Library of Congress, your performance still resembles a drunk penguin trying to ice skate uphill.

As the legendary W. Edwards Deming once said, “In God we trust, all others must bring data.” But old Ed would probably roll over in his grave if he saw how we’ve bastardized his philosophy. We’ve taken his wisdom and turned it into “In data we trust, all others must bring more data.”

Why KPIs Are Like That Friend Who Gives Great Advice But Never Takes It

The Rear-View Mirror Problem

KPIs are essentially historians wearing fortune teller hats.
